These are books that stay on my shelf for further reference or are books that I would definitely read more than once. Below is a brief description. To the left is a list. Many of you may be familiar with another book by Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees. Dance of the Dissident Daughter is Her journey from Christian Tradition to the Sacred Feminine.

Great Quote: “It is time that people realized that God is more than two men and a bird.”

A nationally syndicated columnist on religious issues and a former Trappist monk discusses his youth in Montana, his years of celibacy and  silence, his excommunication from the Catholic Church, and his  disenchantment with organized religion.

Great Quote: I could no longer believe what is, in fact, the foundation of Christian teaching: “You need to be saved.” A deep part of me - or, more accurately, a deep experience in me - smiled quietly, “No, I don’t, and neither does anybody else!”

doug: I liked this book so much I went through and have written down 21 pages of quotes.

Name: Valentine Michael Smith - Ancestry: Human - Origin: Mars

From cult favourite too bestseller, this is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, the man from Mars who taught humankind grokking and watersharing. And love.

Doug: I never read sci-fi of any type but when I learned about this book, I immediately went to our library, checked it out and read it. It is nothing like a typical sci-fi book. Churches actually formed based on this book. Though published in 1961, I think it is as relevant today as it was then and perhaps, more so.

In illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are? which is  something infinitely greater than anything we currently think we are? and learn to live and breathe freely.

Doug: Kelly and I watched all 10 episodes in which Oprah and Eckhart Tolle discussed the book chapter by chapter. Though many may not believe me, I think this book is the best commentary on parts of Romans chapter 7 I have ever read.

Lush, evocative and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our heart.

The charming tale of Santiago, a shepherd boy, who dreams of seeing the  world, is compelling in its own right, but gains resonance through the many lessons Santiago learns during his adventures. He journeys from  Spain to Morocco in search of worldly success, and eventually to Egypt, where a fateful encounter with an alchemist brings him at last to self-understanding and spiritual enlightenment. The story has the comic  charm, dramatic tension and psychological intensity of a fairy tale, but it's full of specific wisdom as well, about becoming self-empowered,  overcoming depression, and believing in dreams.

4AbookThe Four Agreements - Don Miguel Ruiz

In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel  Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective  code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best.

In the rainforests of Peru, an ancient manuscript has been discovered. Within its pages are 9 key insights into life itself - insights each human being is predicted to grasp sequentially, one insight, then another, as we move toward a completely spiritual culture on Earth.

Doug: This was the first “new age” book I read. After reading it, I said to a friend, “I think every insight can be found in the Bible but new age authors seem better than most Christian authors when it comes to presenting them.

Told with drama and insight, the novel revolves around Dan, a world  champion gymnast and student at the University of California at Berkeley. The story begins when Dan meets his powerful 96-year-old mentor Socrates, an all-night gas station attendant.

Guided by this wise old mentor and tempted by an elusive and playful woman  named Joy, Dan journeys through everyday reality and metaphysical realms. He travels the paths of flesh and spirit, romance and terror,  light and darkness, laughter and magic, learning new ways to see the  world and live life fully.

Thematically, this tale of the eternal human quest for the meaning of life is the path of transformation and enlightenment. It uncovers concepts known deep inside but really allowed to wake up and be content with this  knowledge. There is no need to search, so just be happy now! Love is  the only reality of the world, because it is all One - and the only  laws are paradox, humor and change.

harry-potter-and-the-chamber-of-secretsHarry Potter Books 1-7 - J.K. Rowling

There was a time when these books were banned from my house. How things change! An excerpt from a book written by someone I respect regarding the symbolism etc. in the Harry Potter series created an opening in my thinking. Not since Grade 7 and the Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has a series of books enthralled me as did the Harry Potter series. That this series could emerge from the mind of J.K. Rowling is a testament to the amazing creativity that can be found within a human being.

Meeting Jesus Again02Meeting Jesus Again For The First Time - Marcus Borg

Borg’s essential premise involves the importance, even primacy, of our personal image of Jesus. Is Jesus the savior who requires faith? Or,  is Jesus a great teacher of moral ideals? Borg rejects both in chapter  one. Borg imagines Jesus as one to whom spirit, and the experience of spirit, was foundational. Accordingly, Borg does not understand the  Christian life to be "about believing or about being good .... It is  about a relationship with God that involves us in a journey of transformation." Reconstructing the pre-Easter life of Jesus with historical criticism, Borg explains that Jesus was a spirit person, a social prophet and movement founder,  and a teacher of wisdom.

Doug: This book was a key component to our journey and it helped my wife, Kelly, and I make the transition out of fundamentalism. It is a book that we have passed around to others.

These reinterpretations of well-known phrases are insightful, penetrating, and in some cases dazzling. The book will change the way many people read the New Testament. It undoes rigid and dualistic translations of the Christian Scriptures and thereby awakens, challenges, and makes fresh the Good News, that, after all these centuries, is still news.
